In March 2017, reports surfaced that billionaire George Soros had donated over $246 million to groups that helped organize the “Day Without a Woman” protests, which took place on International Women’s Day that year. The event, which encouraged women to skip work and wear red to highlight economic and social inequalities, was organized by many of the same groups behind the Women’s March following President Trump’s inauguration.
Soros, through his Open Society Foundations, had been a significant financial backer of numerous liberal causes, including many of the 544 partners of the Women’s March. According to the Media Research Center, Soros had supported over 100 of these organizations between 2000 and 2014. Among the largest recipients of his donations were groups like the ACLU, Human Rights Watch, and Planned Parenthood.
The protest drew criticism from some who viewed it as a political demonstration against Trump rather than solely about women’s rights. Additionally, the exclusion of pro-life women’s groups from participation added to the controversy surrounding the event.
