NYC Mayor Zohran Mamdani Announces McGuinness Boulevard Redesign in Greenpoint, Says He Called Trump to Oppose Maduro Capture in Venezuela

New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani held a press conference in Greenpoint to announce that the city will complete the long-delayed redesign of McGuinness Boulevard, framing it as a street-safety victory driven by sustained community organizing. He cited the boulevard’s history as a “highway-like” corridor associated with serious injuries and fatalities, and argued that past City Hall decisions prioritized well-connected interests over neighborhood safety. He credited local advocates and elected officials for keeping the issue alive and said his administration will now deliver the full plan.

Mamdani said NYC DOT, led by Commissioner Mike Flynn, will install parking-protected bike lanes along the entire length of McGuinness Boulevard (from Meeker Avenue to the Pulaski Bridge) and convert the roadway to a consistent configuration: one travel lane each direction, one parking-protected bike lane each direction, plus parking/loading lanes. DOT officials said work will start as soon as weather conditions allow, explaining materials can’t be used when the ground is wet or temperatures are below about 40°F—with a tentative expectation of late April or May, depending on conditions.

During Q&A, Mamdani emphasized the McGuinness project is only the beginning of a broader “safe streets” agenda, including discussion of expanding safety treatments citywide (such as “daylighting” at intersections). He also addressed unrelated topics raised by reporters: he said he called President Donald Trump to register opposition to the reported capture of Venezuela’s Nicolás Maduro (describing his objection as anti–regime change and grounded in federal/international law concerns), and he commented on City Hall structure and executive-order rollbacks—saying his administration revoked all prior executive orders issued after September 24 (which he described as the date the prior mayor was indicted), with an intent to restore public trust in executive actions.
