6 Critical Questions from Both Sides About State Governor Hochul’s Response to Synagogue Bomb Threats in New York

Statement from Governor Kathy Hochul

“Earlier today, multiple bomb threats were reported at synagogues across New York State. After a comprehensive investigation, it has been determined these were not credible threats. Recognizing the potential for disruptions during this time of year, I had already directed the New York State Police to coordinate with local law enforcement to ensure the safety of all communities; this deployment will continue at least through the anniversary of the October 7 terror attacks. We are all grateful for the efforts of the men and women of law enforcement who are keeping us safe.

“These threats are horrific and unacceptable — and targeting houses of worship on one of the holiest days of the Jewish calendar is particularly craven. We will not tolerate acts of antisemitism or attempts to incite fear. New Yorkers stand united against all forms of hate and violence.”

3 Questions from Republican Critics:

  1. On what basis were the bomb threats determined to be non-credible, and was there any public transparency regarding the investigation process?
  2. Is the increased law enforcement deployment necessary if the threats were deemed non-credible, and what is the cost to taxpayers?
  3. How will the state government prevent similar incidents from happening, and are there any plans for improving intelligence gathering?

3 Questions from Democrats:

  1. What additional steps can New York take to proactively address rising antisemitism and ensure religious safety beyond law enforcement deployment?
  2. How will Governor Hochul engage with Jewish communities to help them feel safer following these threats?
  3. Can the state establish stronger communication channels with community leaders to ensure timely responses to threats against houses of worship?
