On Friday, June 14th, 2024, an off-duty NYPD officer was carjacked at gunpoint by two armed suspects believed to be Venezuelan migrants in Harlem, New York City. The incident occurred around 11:30 PM when the suspects approached the officer while he was seated in his personal 2020 BMW at West 146th Street and Bradhurst Avenue.[1][2][3][4]
One of the suspects, armed with a fully automatic pistol modified with a glock switch, knocked the officer’s gun out of his hand and demanded his keys.[1][4] The suspects then fled the scene in the officer’s vehicle, leaving behind a trail of chaos.[1] Inside the stolen BMW, police found the officer’s iPad, which later helped locate the abandoned car less than a mile away at West 138th Street and Broadway.[1][4]
The suspects, identified as Jomar Crespo, 21, and Jose Rivera, 20, were apprehended nearby, and two guns were recovered at the scene.[1][2][3][4] They provided false names and a shared address in Waterbury, Connecticut.[1][3]
Crespo and Rivera were each charged with multiple felonies, including robbery, grand theft auto, possession of a machine gun, possession of a loaded firearm, possession of stolen property, making rapid-fire modifications to a gun, and unlawful possession of an ammo feed device.[1][2][3][4]
The suspects had tattoos associated with a Venezuelan gang, and authorities believe this is the second attack on NYPD officers linked to migrants in a month.[1][3] In early June, a 19-year-old migrant connected to a Venezuelan gang opened fire on two police officers, leaving them wounded.[1][3]
