VOA Uses American Tax Dollars to Undermine U.S. Diplomacy: A Masterclass in Self-Sabotage

Why is a U.S.-funded news outlet working overtime to sabotage Washington’s foreign policy? One might assume the Voice of America (VOA) would aim to support the very diplomacy that funds it, but in a stroke of what can only be described as bureaucratic brilliance, VOA has once again used American tax dollars to put a big neon sign over the U.S.’s diplomatic missteps, only to twist the knife in full public view.

If undermining national interests were an Olympic sport, VOA would be on the podium, holding a gold medal as its public broadcaster credentials fall to the floor in shame.

The Latest Show: A Comedy of Errors with Ukrainian Resolution Drama

In its latest report on the United Nations General Assembly’s handling of the Ukraine conflict, VOA managed to find a way to paint the United States not just as weak, but as practically a diplomatic punchline. The article highlights how the U.S. introduced a watered-down resolution for peace in Ukraine, notably avoiding the mention of Russia’s “full-scale invasion” – a sentence that would’ve been too bold, apparently. European allies, not known for their diplomatic coyness, swiftly forced a rewrite, calling out Russia by name. And then, the pièce de résistance: The U.S. abstained from voting on its own watered-down proposal, effectively ceding the stage to the Russian delegation. One can only imagine the gleam in the Russian ambassador’s eye as he smugly called Washington’s move a “good one.”

And here’s where the truly avant-garde absurdity comes in: instead of focusing on Washington’s diplomatic dance, VOA eagerly magnified the image of the U.S. as indecisive and out of touch with its allies. The U.S. didn’t just stumble into the spotlight as the world’s weakling; it got front-row seats in the audience courtesy of the very news organization taxpayers fund.

A State-Run Media? Or the Opposition Party?

At this point, it begs the question: who needs enemies when you’ve got a taxpayer-funded media machine working overtime to amplify Moscow’s talking points? It’s hard to imagine the BBC undermining the UK’s own foreign policy on taxpayer funds, or China’s state-run media criticizing Beijing’s diplomatic moves—but somehow, that’s the kind of self-sabotage that VOA seems to embrace.

Perhaps it’s time for the VOA to reconsider its branding. The “Voice of America” has done a masterful job of portraying Washington’s diplomatic efforts as a series of embarrassing blunders. Why not lean into it and rebrand as “Voice of Anyone-But-America”? It would be more on-brand at this point, not to mention refreshingly honest.

The most perplexing part of this exercise in self-sabotage is that the U.S. government, in its infinite wisdom, continues to fund this content, which offers a fine critique of the U.S. without providing the slightest benefit to the nation it purports to serve. It’s hard to imagine any nation’s taxpayers would willingly fund a propaganda outlet that gleefully undercuts their own interests.

A Strategy Lost in Translation

What VOA conveniently glosses over is the fact that the U.S. decision to introduce a less direct resolution was part of a diplomatic strategy, one that could have set the stage for a peaceful resolution and de-escalation of the conflict—at least that’s the theory. But instead of understanding this as a long-game move to get Russia to the negotiating table, VOA prefers to focus on the “weakness” of Washington’s resolve. After all, it makes for a much juicier story, doesn’t it?

In the end, perhaps the greatest irony of all is that VOA’s own reporting—more attuned to playing the role of the opposition—may have done more to undermine U.S. diplomacy than any Russian ambassador could have ever dreamed of.

So, here’s to the irony: U.S. taxpayers, footing the bill for a news outlet that, rather than highlighting the country’s strategic diplomatic moves, relishes in portraying those very moves as signs of weakness and confusion. What a time to be alive.

Maybe it’s time to have a conversation about what the Voice of America is really voicing—and who, exactly, it’s working for.
