Lawmakers Cite ‘Pretty Damning’ New York Times Article About Migrant Children, Slam the Secretary of Homeland Security for his role in the crisis.

At Tuesday’s House Rules Committee hearing, Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA) spoke about a New York Times article about migrant children.

During May 9th 2023 House Rules Committee hearing, Republican lawmakers cited a New York Times article that exposed the exploitation of migrant children across the U.S. and slammed the Secretary of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, for his role in the crisis.

The article, published on February 25, 2025, reported that at least 85,000 migrant children who arrived at the border without their parents have been placed with sponsors who were not properly vetted by the federal government. Some of these children have been forced to work in brutal conditions, such as farm labor, construction, and domestic service.

Rep. Guy Reschenthaler (R-PA) asked for unanimous consent to enter the article into the record and questioned Chairman Al Green (D-TX) about the impact of Mayorkas’ decision to stop the background checks on the sponsors.

Green agreed that the article was “pretty damning” and said that Mayorkas had made a “problematic” decision that resulted in “incredible inhumane conditions” for the migrant children.

Green also mentioned that he had visited the border and seen a “rape tree” where the undergarments of young girls who had been sexually assaulted by smugglers were hung as trophies.

The hearing was part of a broader debate over immigration policy and border security, as Republicans have accused the Biden administration of creating a humanitarian and national security crisis by reversing some of the Trump administration’s policies.
