Mayor Mamdani’s ‘Tin Cup Day’ may have been a bust ( Video NY1)

This video criticizes Mayor Mamdani’s recent budget announcements, suggesting his “Tin Cup Day” may have been ineffective.

He came out about two weeks ago with this apocalyptic press conference, saying we have a $12 billion budget gap. It’s concerning.
And then, I guess the idea was: you raise the alarms, you say we need money from Albany, we need to raise taxes on the wealthy. But then he comes out yesterday—on Wednesday—and says, “Well, actually, it’s only $7 billion.”

I guess he’s trying to show that even if we find a billion dollars’ worth of savings, and even after revenue came in higher than expected, we still have a $7 billion gap and we still need the money. But I feel like, based on some of the news coverage from Wednesday, it didn’t seem to work. It almost had the opposite effect—people were saying, “Well, you were being misleading, and you were overstating the problem.” And then you lose credibility.

I was just going to say that. I don’t know. Maybe it works, but it seemed like the message didn’t quite land. And then you become the mayor who cried wolf, right? How can I believe you?

I was joking—like, hey, if we wait long enough, we’re going to have a surplus. The fact that the number moved so dramatically in such a short amount of time makes the mayor not look believable.
