Five selected local food programs and three citywide referral or search tools. Use this guide to distinguish groceries to prepare at home from ready-to-eat meals. It is not every food-assistance location in Manhattan.
Need food today? Call 311 to ask about nearby options. Confirm the distribution day, remaining supplies, registration and documents before traveling. Different services at the same organization may operate on different days.
Food programs and finders
1. New York Common Pantry — Choice Pantry Manhattan
8 East 109th Street, East Harlem
917-720-9700
New intakes and emergency food: Monday–Saturday, 9 a.m.–4 p.m. Regular pantry distribution: Wednesday–Saturday, 10 a.m.–2 p.m. Members receive groceries every 14 days. New members should bring identification for household members and proof of address; check the accepted-document list with the provider.
2. The Bowery Mission — meals
227 Bowery, New York, NY 10002
212-674-3456
The operator posts meals every day: breakfast begins at 8 a.m., lunch at 1 p.m. and dinner at 5:30 p.m. No ID is required. Meals can be eaten indoors, with to-go meals available on request. Chapel attendance is not required to receive food. Confirm current serving times before traveling.
3. Holy Apostles Soup Kitchen and Pantry
296 Ninth Avenue, New York, NY 10001
212-924-0167
Weekday meals are offered to people in need. Call the soup-kitchen number to confirm the serving window. The food pantry is a separate service; ask about its current registration, reservation and distribution arrangements rather than assuming meal hours also apply to groceries.
4. Food Bank For NYC — Community Kitchen
252 West 116th Street, New York, NY 10026
212-566-7855
The current page lists community meals for all ages on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 4–6 p.m. In 2026, grocery/produce distribution is on the second and fourth Tuesdays, 10 a.m.–1 p.m., while supplies last, with Plentiful reservations encouraged. These are separate services. Ask about holiday closures and the current schedule; do not rely on older daily-pantry hours.
5. Xavier Mission — Welcome Table
55 West 15th Street, between Fifth and Sixth Avenues, Manhattan
347-305-8084
The operator lists Sunday hot meals from 1–3 p.m. This is Xavier Mission’s current general number; confirm the meal location and schedule. Its customer-choice food pantry has separate rules and is not covered by the Sunday meal hours.
6. NYC311 — food pantries and soup kitchens
Citywide information and food-provider search
311
Ask for a nearby food pantry or soup kitchen. Pantries provide groceries and soup kitchens provide prepared meals. Call the selected provider before visiting to confirm hours and availability. The number is a city referral route, not a local pantry line.
7. City Harvest Food Map
Online food locator for Manhattan and all NYC boroughs
Find pantries, soup kitchens, community fridges and mobile distributions. Check the details for the chosen site; hours and services can change without notice.
8. Food Bank For NYC — Find Food
Online food and service locator
Search for free groceries, prepared meals and SNAP-support locations. A listing does not reserve food or confirm same-day availability; review the program’s own details and contact the provider where possible.
Before you visit
Ask whether an appointment or pantry reservation is required, what household documents are accepted, how often you may collect groceries and whether bags or a cart are recommended. Dietary options, accessibility and available supplies vary by provider. One pantry’s registration rules do not apply to every meal program.
Addresses, contacts and published schedules were checked against official provider and government sources. Telephone numbers have not been tested by calling. Published hours do not guarantee a meal or grocery package will still be available when you arrive.
