Queens Free Legal Help: Housing, Benefits, Family and Civil Legal Resources

Queens community resources · Sources reviewed October 26, 2026

Eight routes to free civil legal assistance and legal information for Queens residents: housing, public benefits, family matters, older-adult services and general referrals. Some entries are local offices; others are citywide programs serving Queens.

Before calling: have your court papers, notices and deadlines available. Ask whether the provider can handle your issue and what eligibility or appointment rules apply. Information, brief advice and full legal representation are different levels of help; availability varies.

1. Queens Legal Services — civil legal intake

Contact: 917-661-4500 — shared LSNYC intake, Monday–Friday, 9:30 a.m.–4 p.m. Queens office: 347-592-2200.

89-00 Sutphin Boulevard, fifth floor, Jamaica, NY 11435. QLS serves low-income Queens communities with civil legal help. LSNYC lists housing, government benefits, family, consumer and other civil topics; ask intake whether your issue is handled locally. Language assistance is available. Contact intake before visiting; capacity and case criteria apply.

2. Queens Defenders — anti-eviction help

Contact: 844-783-3673 — legal-help line.

Ask specifically about anti-eviction services, current intake and the meeting location. The provider lists anti-eviction representation alongside other practices. Its contact page and homepage display different office addresses, so this guide uses the intake phone rather than directing visitors to an unconfirmed office. Calling does not guarantee representation.

3. The Legal Aid Society — Queens family, domestic violence and divorce intake

Contact: 718-286-2450 — Monday, Wednesday or Friday, 9 a.m.–11 a.m., as listed by the provider.

Contact the Queens team about the family and domestic-violence matters covered by this practice. Ask about current eligibility, case scope and available appointments. The provider directs questions about representation of children to its borough Juvenile Rights Practice instead; this listing is not that children’s representation line.

4. The Legal Aid Society — government benefits

Contact: 888-663-6880 — Access to Benefits helpline, Monday–Friday, 10 a.m.–3 p.m.

Citywide help available to Queens residents with getting, keeping or using public benefits, including SNAP, SSI, SSDI, Medicaid and Medicare. Tell the team your issue and any hearing or response deadline. This is a legal assistance route, separate from submitting a benefits application to the government.

5. JASA Legal Services for Elder Justice — Queens residents age 60+

Contact: 718-286-1500 — Queens legal contact in NYC Aging’s finder; 212-273-5272 — JASA Help Center.

JASA provides free civil legal services for Queens residents age 60 and older. Listed topics include eviction and housing rights, foreclosure and property fraud, and benefits such as Social Security, SSI, Medicare and Medicaid. Ask about intake and where to meet; the Help Center is a general referral contact, not the direct Queens legal line.

6. City Bar Justice Center — civil legal hotline

Contact: 212-626-7383 — Monday–Thursday, 10 a.m.–noon and 2–4 p.m.; Friday, 9 a.m.–noon.

Attorney-staffed assistance for callers of limited income on civil issues such as family law, housing, benefits, debt collection and bankruptcy. This citywide service covers Queens. English and Spanish attorneys and interpreting services are available. The official page also links an online request form. Ask what help is available; a hotline consultation is not a promise of full representation.

7. Family Legal Care — New York Family Court information

Contact: 212-343-1122 — helpline; online contact options are on the provider’s page.

An independent nonprofit offering Family Court information, referrals and access to further case support. The helpline provides legal information rather than advice about an individual situation. Ask about attorney consultation options. No walk-ins at its administrative office. Its FAQ says it does not handle divorce matters; use another provider for that issue.

8. LawHelpNY — find another free legal provider

Contact: Official legal directory and LiveHelp.

Search by Queens County or ZIP code and the type of legal problem. LiveHelp can assist with finding information and service listings. LawHelpNY is a directory and information resource; it does not provide legal advice. Check each listed provider’s service area, income criteria, intake process and current capacity.
