Three selected New York Public Library locations and three routes to practical library services. This is a starting selection, not a complete Manhattan library directory. Branch lending services, research-library access and classes have different arrangements. Regular hours can change for holidays, renovations or events.
Libraries and practical services
1. Stavros Niarchos Foundation Library (SNFL)
455 Fifth Avenue, New York, NY 10016
212-340-0863
Published regular hours: Monday–Thursday 8 a.m.–9 p.m.; Friday 8 a.m.–8 p.m.; Saturday–Sunday 10 a.m.–6 p.m. NYPL identifies the building as fully accessible. This is NYPL’s largest circulating branch, with services for different ages. Individual centers may have separate schedules; the Thomas Yoseloff Business Center requires a virtual consultation before an in-person research appointment.
2. Stephen A. Schwarzman Building — research and quiet study
Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street, New York, NY 10018
917-275-6975
A major research library with historical collections and research services. NYPL lists accessible entrances at 40th Street and 42nd Street. Check the building and reading-room schedules separately. Current dated notices: the building will be closed Monday, November 2, 2026, and the Rose Main Reading Room will be closed Sunday, November 1, 2026. For general borrowing, also consider nearby SNFL.
3. Harlem Library
9 West 124th Street, New York, NY 10027
212-348-5620
Published regular hours: Monday–Thursday 11 a.m.–7 p.m.; Friday–Saturday 10 a.m.–5 p.m.; Sunday 1–5 p.m. NYPL lists this branch as partially accessible. Call ahead about the particular entrance, floor or service you need. Check the branch calendar for current programs and any registration requirements.
4. Getting an NYPL library card
Online application and validation at an NYPL location when required
A free card is available to people who live, work, attend school or pay property taxes in New York State. The online application is for people ages 13 and older. Immediate digital-card access requires applicants to be in New York State when applying. Check current identification and validation requirements, and ask the library about cards for younger children.
5. Public computers and digital access
NYPL locations; equipment and session availability vary
NYPL provides free self-service computer access through its reservation system. Its PC policy requires your own valid library card and PIN or password. Ask staff about available workstations, session limits, Wi-Fi and any printing charges at the branch you choose. Computer sessions end before the building closes, so confirm the last available session.
6. Free English classes and conversation practice
Selected NYPL sites in Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island, plus online classes
NYPL offers free English learning at several levels. Series-based classes require assessment and enrollment; published requirements include age 18 or older and in-person testing and registration. Conversation classes have a separate process: online sessions require event registration, while in-person conversation sessions welcome walk-ins. Confirm the class level, location and current time using the official calendar.
Plan your visit
Check the chosen location’s current alerts, accessibility, reading-room rules and program registration. A free library card does not mean printing or all separate services are free. NYPL serves Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island; Brooklyn and Queens have separate public library systems.
