NEW YORK. New York State says drivers should expect increased patrols and sobriety checkpoints through the Memorial Day weekend as police target impaired, reckless and distracted driving during one of the busiest travel periods of the year.

Why it matters

The state also says temporary, short-term lane closures for road and bridge construction on state highways will be suspended for the holiday weekend to ease traffic delays.

For downstate travelers, this typically means more visible enforcement on major corridors and a higher likelihood of checkpoints near event and nightlife areas — with an emphasis on safe travel planning.

What to watch next

Motorists are also reminded to slow down and move over for stopped vehicles and roadside workers, and to use designated “text stops” or rest areas if they need to use a phone.
