NEW YORK. New York State says its road crews beat their April pothole repair target by a wide margin. Governor Kathy Hochul announced that the State Department of Transportation filled more than 250,000 potholes during the month, exceeding the initial goal by 75,000.

Why it matters
For drivers, the issue is more than cosmetic. Potholes can damage tires and suspensions, slow buses and delivery routes, and create safety hazards for cyclists and motorcyclists. The spring repair blitz is meant to stabilize road conditions after winter and before heavier summer travel.
The state says NYSDOT crews were out across New York patching potholes and laying new asphalt. BigNY readers who commute between NYC, Long Island, the Hudson Valley and upstate regions should still report hazardous state-road conditions through official channels when they see them.
What to watch next
The announcement is also a reminder that local road quality depends on multiple agencies. Some streets are city or county roads, while others are state-maintained highways, so the right reporting path can vary by location.
