New York Honors Victims of Hamas Attack: Governor Hochul Orders Flags at Half-Staff and Landmarks Lit Yellow on October 7

Governor Kathy Hochul has announced that on October 7, 2024, New York State will honor the victims of the October 7, 2023, attack on Israel by flying flags at half-staff from sunrise to sunset. Additionally, several landmarks across the state will be illuminated in yellow in solidarity with Israel and the hostages still in captivity.

“One year after the horrific atrocities committed against the people of Israel, my heart goes out to the victims and their families,” Governor Hochul stated. “New York stands with Israel — today and every day. As the home of the largest Jewish population outside of Israel, we will do everything in our power to defend against the forces of hatred and stand firmly against those who perpetuate it.”

The landmarks that will be illuminated include the Governor Mario M. Cuomo Bridge, Empire State Plaza, Niagara Falls, and 1 World Trade Center, among others.

In addition, Governor Hochul directed the State Police to enhance security and heighten surveillance this week due to recent threats, including Iran’s bombardment of Israel. The enhanced security measures aim to protect critical infrastructure, synagogues, mosques, community centers, and other at-risk locations across New York State.
