NEW YORK — According to an official
announcement from the Office of the Mayor of New York City
and the New York City Economic Development Corporation,
New York City Mayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani and NYCEDC Interim President & CEO
Jeanny Pak announced that the New York Knicks’ 2026 NBA postseason run
has generated an estimated $202 million in economic activity from home playoff games played so far.
According to the city’s analysis, the Knicks’ return to the NBA Finals for the first time in
27 years could have an even larger impact if the series brings additional games back to
Madison Square Garden. Each additional Knicks home playoff game is expected to generate approximately
$90 million in economic activity for New York City.
If all possible home games in the NBA Finals are played, the Knicks’ full postseason run could generate a cumulative
$465 million in economic activity across the city.
“New Yorkers have been waiting 27 years for this moment,” Mayor Mamdani said. “When the Knicks win, New York comes alive.”
Mamdani said the economic benefit extends beyond the arena itself, supporting small businesses, workers and neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs.
NYCEDC Interim President & CEO Jeanny Pak said the Knicks’ return to the NBA Finals has energized New Yorkers across the city and demonstrated how professional sports can strengthen both community life and the local economy.
“As New Yorkers gather at restaurants and local businesses on game nights to root for our city’s team, this historic run is a reminder of how deeply sports strengthen our community — and our economy,” Pak said.
Economic Impact Across New York City
The city estimates that the Knicks could generate up to an additional $263 million in economic activity during the NBA Finals, on top of the $202 million already generated during the first three rounds of the postseason.
NYCEDC’s analysis accounts for direct visitor spending, including tickets, concessions, merchandise, transportation and lodging for overnight visitors. The estimate also includes indirect and induced impacts from additional spending by arena operators and employees.
City officials noted that the estimated $202 million generated during the first three rounds of the 2026 postseason is lower than last year’s postseason impact because the Knicks played seven home games in 2026 rather than nine.
The Knicks swept the Philadelphia 76ers and Cleveland Cavaliers in the Eastern Conference semifinals and Eastern Conference finals, respectively, according to the city announcement.
More Than a Sports Story
For New York City, the Knicks’ NBA Finals run is more than a sports story. It is a major economic event for Midtown Manhattan, Madison Square Garden, restaurants, hotels, transportation providers, retailers, nightlife venues and small businesses across the city.
As the Finals return to Madison Square Garden, the city’s message is clear: when the Knicks win, New York’s economy wins too.
