Hochul Cites CDC Provisional Data Showing Major Drop in New York Overdose Deaths Through 2025 - data chart

NEW YORK STATE. Governor Kathy Hochul highlighted new provisional CDC figures that the state says show a substantial reduction in overdose deaths in New York from 2022 through 2025. The announcement points to a third consecutive annual decline, with the largest reductions tied to opioid-related deaths.

Why this matters

Overdose trends affect local hospitals, first responders, community health organizations and families statewide. State leaders described the declines as a sign that prevention, treatment, harm reduction and recovery supports are having an impact, while noting the need for continued work in communities that have not seen the same improvements.

Where the numbers come from

The Governor’s Office cited the CDC’s National Vital Statistics System provisional data. Because the data is provisional, figures can change as reporting is finalized.
