MANHATTAN. NYC says it will widen the protected bike lane on Sixth Avenue to improve safety ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The city says the project will double the lane width from six feet to 10 feet on one of Manhattan’s busiest protected corridors.
Why the city says it matters
NYC frames the redesign as a safety and capacity upgrade for a summer that will bring higher pedestrian and visitor volumes. Wider protected space is intended to reduce conflicts between cyclists, pedestrians and turning vehicles, especially around major destinations.
